Commitment To Innovation
Newtown Dentistry for Kids, Newtown Orthodontics and Newtown Dentistry for Adults is proud of our commitment to using the latest technology for your benefit.
This high-resolution, 3-dimensional imaging system makes diagnosis and treatment planning more accurate than any other system. It allows us to determine the position of supernumerary teeth & developing tooth buds, impacted teeth, and aids in the visualization of cysts or tumors in the mouth. It offers superior image results while still maintaining the lowest radiation dosage!
Dental lasers are safe, fast, comfortable and effective. They are useful in removing decay, aiding in soft tissue surgeries and they may even eliminate the need for anesthesia. Lasers also promote faster healing, with little or no post-surgical discomfort.
Digital Dental X-Rays
Our office is all digital, which means not only that our x-rays are faster, but they also reduce radiation by up to 90 percent. Computerized applications allow us to analyze decay on a whole new level with exceptional precision.
SoproLiFE Intraoral Camera with Caries Detection
This unique camera allows patients and practitioners to see all areas of the mouth with extreme detail and clarity in real time. The SoproLIFE camera has three settings one of which uses LED to emit a harmless blue light which then reflects an auto-fluorescent signal that indicates the presence of dental caries. It can also be used during treatment to minimize the amount of healthy tooth structure that is taken away when removing decay. This technology allows us to practice minimally invasive dentistry, and is a great tool in helping patients and parents understand treatment recommendations.
The CariScreen Caries Susceptibility Test
A simple 1-minute chair-side test for assessing patients’ caries risk. The test is quick and painless. We simply take a swab sample of the plaque from the teeth, which is then combined with special bioluminescence reagents within the swab. This will then create a reaction which is then measured with the CariScreen meter. The meter will give a score between 0 and 9,999. A score under 1,500 is considering relatively healthy, while above that shows considerable risk for decay. This technology not only allows us to measure our patients’ risk for decay at their visit, but also helps measure their progress as they follow the recommended protocols for reducing risk.
The Xylitol Difference
A sugar that promotes healthy teeth? It may sound a bit far-fetched. but it’s true. Xylitol is a white crystalline sugar alcohol that looks and tastes just like the sugar in your sugar bowl. Xylitol is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables like berries, plums, lettuce and mushrooms. But, instead of promoting tooth decay, xylitol actually help prevent it.
What makes xylitol so special? While at first glance this natural substance might be mistaken for refined sugar, it yields 40 percents fewer calories than sugar. But it’s xylitol’s health benefits that make this natural sweetener so remarkable. Xylitol:
- help prevent tooth decay;
- reduces plaque formation on teeth;
- blocks the acids that demineralize tooth enamel;
- helps repair damaged enamel;
- halts the growth of specific types of acid-producing bacteria linked to tooth decay;
- helps reduce gingival inflammation;
- relieves dry mouth;
- helps maintain upper-respiratory health and thwarts ear infections by combating bacteria in the nasopharynx;
- may help prevent osteoporosis;
- does not trigger an insulin reaction in the body, making it useful for diabetics and those who are hypoglycemic;
- has a low rating on the glycemic index (7); and
- is safe for all ages in amounts needed for dental benefits.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a quick, comfortable and affordable way to stop cavities from growing. Because it keeps decay from getting worse, fixing the teeth can be put off until a child is older or has an easier time sitting through treatment. Sometimes SDF is the only treatment needed if the cavities are very small.
It is a colorless liquid made up of fluoride and silver ions. It kills the bacteria that cause cavities. In scientific terms, SDF acts as an antimicrobial agent that stops cavities from growing by making the tooth harder, and limiting the growth of bacteria that causes tooth decay. Based on clinical trials, SDF works to stop cavities from growing in 70 to 90 percent of treated teeth (or as many as 9 out of 10). Teeth treated with SDF need to be checked by a dentist at least every 6 months to make sure the decay has not progressed.
We are excited to offer silver diamine fluoride and if SDF is indicated for you child during your visit we will thoroughly answer any questions you have, and give you all the information you need about the treatment.
